I'm constantly looking for a horizon. Sometimes the horizon is a joyful revelation, many times it's hidden by thick fog and tough sea and other times it's not a horizon at all, but a divine push or pull.
I have my story in my songs. Angel Song always reminds me where I'm from. It's the oldest, and every time I start those first notes on the guitar and close my eyes, I'm back there in the moment I first heard and felt it. It was a tough space. People ask what it's about; it's about the direct heart and spirit to hang on when there's no earth left to walk, no air left to breathe and no light to get your bearings. You're on the floor in your darkest moments, pleading with your angels to help out.
I've experienced near death, the most serious in 2016. That NDE provided me incredible clarity about things that had got me down for such a long time. I no longer feel so deeply blue, live in the moment and feel such joy in simple things. I now can't draw like I used to and don't like listening to piano - after a life yearning to play it, I can't stand it! I also slowly discovered I've lost my ability to create new music on my beloved guitar. I was so frustrated I'm unable to write songs easily and naturally any more.
But because I'm always seeking the horizon, I discovered a different way to experience music - the drums. This instrument opened up a new pathway into music through new parts of my brain. Now I'm into music that matches my spikey spirit, like punk and rap. I can still play my songs I wrote before 2016, probably because I've played them hundreds of times.
My music now is high energy sensory friendly punk about homelessness and the mental health/psych system. I've been writing 'Subtle Roar' album with creative friend Dan Flynn, after an earlier release 'Fault Line' which is a very layered story album very much in the style of my earlier music around Angel Song. The Subtle Roar launch gig coming up in 2026 at Bakehouse Studios in Richmond (Vic) on Saturday 28 February. Subtle Roar is a multi-artform project spanning music, theatre, comedy and visual art.
Thankyou to everyone who keeps me afloat by supporting my music and all my creative art and advocacy.
